To shorten the system:

File point of shaft round. 
Move the cable joint over and screw in at the pipe.
Saw the shaft to length and use vice grips to pull out the point so that it may be flattened.
Extend the point far enough so that it can easily be flattened.
Use a hammer on an anvil to flatten the points. To ensure that the shaft does not split – do not hammer too hard.
The cable joint tapers towards the inside.
The shaft is flattened so that it cannot pull through.  Ensure that there is enough flattening to prevent the shaft pulling through.

Lengthening of the system:

Order an extension piece as required. 
Join the pipe with a Plasson coupling and the shaft with a 12mm threaded rod and double knot the rope.
